E-Commerce Compliance in Mauritius: MRA, VAT, and BRN Requirements

E-Commerce in Mauritius: The Compliance Landscape

Running an e-commerce business in Mauritius means navigating specific regulatory requirements. The Mauritius Revenue Authority has clear rules about how online transactions must be handled. Getting this wrong can result in penalties, frozen accounts, or worse. If you are just starting, read our guide on [e-commerce benefits for SMEs](/blog/ecommerce-benefits-smes-mauritius) and [ecommerce website cost in Mauritius](/blog/ecommerce-website-cost-mauritius-2026).

BRN: Your Business Registration Number

Every e-commerce business in Mauritius needs a Business Registration Number. This number must appear on all invoices, your website (typically in the footer), tax filings, and VAT returns. Without it, you cannot legally operate.

VAT Requirements

If your annual turnover exceeds Rs 6 million, you must register for VAT. Even below this threshold, voluntary registration can be beneficial for credibility and reclaiming input VAT.

Key rules for e-commerce: the standard rate is 15% on most goods and services. Invoices must show the VAT amount, VAT rate, and your VAT registration number. If you sell digital products or services, VAT applies. And you must maintain records for six years.

MRA Compliance for Online Sales

The MRA requires e-commerce businesses to issue proper invoices for every transaction, maintain digital records of all sales, report income accurately in tax filings, and collect VAT if registered.

Non-compliance is expensive. MRA audits can result in penalties that exceed the tax you owe. Building compliance into your platform from the start is cheaper than fixing it later.

Payment Integration

Mauritius has a specific payment landscape. MCB Juice is the most popular mobile payment method. MauCAS is the national payment switch. Bank transfers are still common for larger transactions. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted but less common than mobile payments. Your e-commerce platform must integrate with these local methods. International payment gateways like Stripe do not work in Mauritius. PayPal has limitations. You need local payment integration from day one. Read about [MCB Juice integration](/blog/mcb-juice-integration-mauritius-2026) for technical details.

Data Protection

The Data Protection Act Mauritius applies to e-commerce businesses. A privacy policy is required on your website. Consent is needed for data collection. Data storage must comply with local requirements. Cross-border data transfers have restrictions. Read our guide on [new data protection rules](/blog/new-data-protection-rules-mauritius-what-your-business-must-do).

This is not optional. The DPA has enforcement powers, and non-compliance can result in significant fines.

Common Mistakes

Using international platforms without localisation is the biggest one. Stripe does not work in Mauritius. PayPal has limitations. You need local payment integration.

Ignoring VAT on digital products catches many businesses. Even if you are based outside Mauritius, selling to Mauritian customers may trigger VAT obligations.

Missing invoice requirements is another. MRA audits can result in penalties for non-compliant invoices.

And having no privacy policy is a legal requirement, not optional.

Building Compliant E-Commerce

The best approach is to build compliance into your platform from the start. This means automated VAT calculations, proper invoice generation, local payment integration, privacy policy implementation, and record keeping systems. Retrofitting compliance is always more expensive than building it in.
