What Mozambique’s METIX Instant Payments Could Mean for SME Invoicing
Faster payment rails need clear records
Mozambique’s instant payment system, METIX, was rolled out by Banco de Moçambique on 16 March 2026. The central bank says funds are made available to the beneficiary within seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Transactions can be initiated through bank websites, mobile applications or USSD, without internet access or mobile data. The Bank says individual interbank transfers through the platform are free. Faster settlement does not automatically make bookkeeping accurate. A payment still needs to be matched to the right customer, invoice, order and date. If staff check several channels or copy details manually, the record can remain difficult to reconcile even when money arrives quickly.
Start with the payment-to-invoice trail
Map what happens after a customer agrees to buy. Who creates the invoice? Which reference does the customer use? Who confirms receipt? How does the sale reach the cashbook or accounting record? Where is stock or service delivery updated?

A workflow should give each sale a consistent reference and record payment status against it. Staff should distinguish an invoice awaiting payment from one paid, refunded or needing a check. Where the channel does not provide a suitable match automatically, make the manual check visible instead of treating an unverified payment as settled.
A focused operational platform can connect sales, invoices and payment checks around the business’s process. Start with [custom platforms for business operations](/services/custom-platforms).
Keep the process usable across channels
METIX supports USSD as well as web and mobile banking. An SME workflow should not assume every staff member or customer will have internet access at the point of payment. A mobile-first process might let staff record a payment reference, customer and invoice promptly, then complete reconciliation when they have the necessary details.
If connectivity is intermittent, decide what information can be recorded safely and how later updates avoid duplicate entries. Test these choices with the people handling sales and accounts.
Separate confirmed facts from assumptions
METIX’s introduction is a change to national payment infrastructure. It does not show that every SME transaction settles instantly, that every business transfer is free, or that accounting systems connect automatically. Banco de Moçambique’s announcement specifically describes free individual interbank transfers; confirm applicable charges and operating details with your financial institution. The central bank’s 27 February 2026 [notice summary](https://www.bancomoc.mz/en/media/highlights/notice-no-1-gbm-2026-establishes-the-mozambique-instant-payment-system-and-approves-its-regulation/) established the system and approved its regulation.
Before buying software, record how long payment matching takes, how many transactions need follow-up and how often staff correct incomplete records. Compare those measures after a workflow change; no particular saving or financial return is guaranteed. The useful question is whether the business can identify what a payment relates to, record it once and make the next action clear.
