E-Commerce Payment Integration Mauritius: MCB Juice, MauCAS, and Bank Transfers

8 min readPublished 2026-09-07By The Mosaic Code

Payment Integration in Mauritius: What Actually Works

E-commerce payment integration in Mauritius is not the same as anywhere else. Stripe does not work here. PayPal has limitations. Square is not available. Your customers pay with MCB Juice, MauCAS, and bank transfers. If your e-commerce store does not integrate with these methods, it does not work for Mauritius. For a comparison of payment gateway options, read our [best payment gateways guide](/blog/best-payment-gateways-mauritius-2026).

This guide covers what each method requires, how to integrate them, and what most developers miss.

MCB Juice: The Dominant Payment Method

MCB Juice is the most popular mobile payment method in Mauritius. Over 70% of smartphone users have Juice installed. If your e-commerce store does not support Juice, you are ignoring how most Mauritians pay.

How Juice Integration Works

The customer adds products to their cart and proceeds to checkout. The store generates a Juice payment request with the order amount. The customer opens Juice, scans the QR code or confirms the payment request, and pays. The store receives payment confirmation in real-time. The order is confirmed and the customer receives a receipt.

What Integration Requires

MCB Juice integration is not a plugin. It requires API access from MCB, a merchant account, secure handling of payment credentials, real-time payment status checking, refund processing through Juice, and automatic reconciliation of payments with orders.

A developer who has not integrated with Juice before will underestimate the complexity. Payment confirmation timing, error handling, and refund workflows all have nuances that affect your business.

Common Juice Integration Mistakes

Not handling payment timeouts. If the customer pays but the confirmation does not arrive, what happens? The system must reconcile payment status before confirming the order.

Not handling partial payments. Some customers split payment between Juice and another method. Your store must handle this.

Not processing refunds through Juice. Refunds must go back through Juice, not as cash or bank transfer. This requires specific API calls.

MauCAS: The National Payment Switch

MauCAS processes card payments in Mauritius. Every business that accepts credit or debit cards uses MauCAS. For e-commerce, MauCAS integration means customers can pay with their local bank cards.

How MauCAS Integration Works

The customer selects card payment at checkout. The store redirects to the MauCAS payment page or uses a hosted payment field. The customer enters their card details. MauCAS processes the payment through the card network. The store receives approval or decline. The order is confirmed or the customer is asked to try another method.

What Integration Requires

MauCAS integration requires a merchant account through a local bank, SSL certificate for secure transactions, 3D Secure authentication support, PCI DSS compliance (or use of MauCAS-hosted payment fields to avoid PCI scope), and handling of payment callbacks.

Card Payment Considerations

Not all cards work the same way. Debit cards have daily limits. Credit cards have different processing fees. International cards may not work through MauCAS. Your store must handle each scenario gracefully.

Bank Transfers: The B2B Method

Bank transfers remain common for larger orders and B2B transactions in Mauritius. While slower than Juice or cards, they are essential for certain business models.

How Bank Transfer Integration Works

The customer selects bank transfer at checkout. The store displays the bank account details and reference number. The customer makes the transfer from their banking app or in person. The store receives notification of the transfer (either through bank webhook or manual confirmation). The order is confirmed once payment is verified.

What Integration Requires

Bank account details display, unique reference number generation for each order, bank webhook integration (if available) for automatic confirmation, manual confirmation interface for matching transfers to orders, and timeout handling for unconfirmed transfers.

Bank Transfer Best Practices

Set a payment window. If payment is not confirmed within 48 hours, the order is cancelled. This prevents orders sitting in limbo.

Send reminders. A WhatsApp reminder after 24 hours increases the completion rate.

Handle partial payments. Some customers pay in installments. Your system must handle this gracefully.

The Three-Method Approach

Most e-commerce stores in Mauritius benefit from offering all three payment methods:

MCB Juice

For mobile-savvy customers who want instant payment. The majority of your orders will come through Juice. Optimise the Juice checkout experience.

MauCAS (Card)

For customers who prefer card payments, international customers, and larger orders where card payment is more convenient.

Bank Transfer

For B2B orders, bulk purchases, and customers who prefer traditional banking.

Compliance Requirements

MRA VAT on Payment Processing

Payment processing does not change your VAT obligations. VAT is calculated on the sale, not the payment method. Your invoicing must be consistent regardless of how the customer pays. Read our [MRA e-invoicing for e-commerce guide](/blog/mra-e-invoicing-ecommerce-mauritius-2026) for full compliance details.

Data Protection

Payment data is sensitive. Your e-commerce store must handle payment information securely. Never store card numbers on your own servers. Use MauCAS-hosted payment fields to keep card data out of your scope. Encrypt all payment-related data. Follow PCI DSS guidelines.

Record Keeping

MRA requires records of all transactions for six years. This includes the payment method, transaction ID, amount, and timestamp. Your e-commerce platform must maintain these records automatically.

What Most Developers Miss

Payment Reconciliation

Matching payments to orders is harder than it sounds. A customer might pay for two orders in one Juice transaction. A bank transfer might cover multiple invoices. Your system must handle these scenarios.

Refund Workflows

Refunds are not just reversing a payment. They require: original transaction reference, refund amount validation, MRA-compliant credit notes, and customer notification. Each payment method has different refund processes.

Payment Status Handling

Payments have multiple states: pending, processing, completed, failed, refunded. Your store must handle each state correctly and update the order status accordingly.

Error Recovery

What happens when a payment fails? When the network drops during a transaction? When the customer cancels mid-payment? Your store must recover gracefully and not leave orders in ambiguous states.

The Integration Process

For a full picture of e-commerce costs and compliance, also read our [e-commerce compliance guide](/blog/ecommerce-compliance-mauritius) and [e-commerce website cost guide](/blog/ecommerce-website-cost-mauritius-2026).

Step 1: Choose Payment Methods

Decide which methods you need. Most stores need Juice and at least one card option. B2B stores add bank transfer.

Step 2: Apply for Merchant Accounts

MCB Juice requires a merchant account through MCB. MauCAS requires a merchant account through a local bank. This process takes 2 to 4 weeks.

Step 3: Technical Integration

Your developer connects your e-commerce store to each payment API. This includes checkout flow, payment confirmation, error handling, and refund processing.

Step 4: Testing

Test each payment method with real transactions in sandbox mode. Test error scenarios. Test refund workflows. Test reconciliation. Do not launch without thorough testing.

Step 5: Launch and Monitor

Monitor payment success rates. Track failed transactions. Watch for reconciliation issues. Address problems quickly.
